He graduated from the Medical College of Wisconsin, in Milwaukee in 1991. His postgraduate training included an Internship at Hartford Hospital in Connecticut, and Residency at the New York Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, in Manhattan.

Dr. Schulman was in private practice in Manhattan from 1997 to 2011. He opened Marin Integrative Physiatry, located in Novato, California, in May of 2012, then served as Medical Director of Integrative Medicine in PMR at the Hunter Holmes McGuire VAMC in Richmond VA. He is now back in Santa Rosa, in Sonoma County, CA, in private practice at West County Integrative Medicine.

Dr. Schulman’s specialties include Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Functional Medicine, Orthopedic Medicine (prolotherapy, platelet rich plasma injections, ultrasound guided injections), Medical Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine, and Movement reeducation.

Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation:

Dr. Schulman has been Board Certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) since May, 1996. The medical specialty of PM&R – Physiatry – includes study of the peripheral nervous system, the musculoskeletal system, and Electrodiagnostic Medicine. Training in physical medicine includes care for neck and back pain, sports injuries, arthritis, neuropathy (nerve disease) and myopathy (muscle disease). Training in rehabilitation includes the care of persons with illness such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury and amputation.

Orthopedic Medicine:

Dr. Schulman completed the Hackett-Hemwall Prolotherapy Course for Physicians in 2011 and has attended the annual Hackett-Hemwall Honduras Prolotherapy trip since 2013 and was Clinic Director in 2017, 2018 and 2019. Additionally, Dr. Schulman regularly attends workshops sponsored by the American Academy of Orthopedic Medicine and has attained the Interventional and Regenerative Orthopaedic Medicine Certification through the organization.

Medical Acupuncture:

Dr. Schulman began his study of acupuncture in 1996 at the Helms Medical Institute (HMI) – the largest and longest running acupuncture course for physicians in the United States. Since 1996, he has continued teaching with the HMI program, and now serves as a senior preceptor. Dr. Schulman created an advanced acupuncture course for HMI for the treatment of pain conditions.

He is Board Certified and a Fellow of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture (AAMA), the largest physician-only acupuncture organization in the United States. He served on the Board of AAMA from 1999-2002 and from 2006-2008. He was the Chair of the Legal and Legislative Council for AAMA from 2008-2012.

Herbal Medicine:

Dr. Schulman’s study of Herbal Medicine includes a 500-hour course at Tri-State College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, completed in 2001. He is one of the few physicians with the qualification of Registered Herbalist with the American Herbalist Guild, which he attained in 2012.

Functional Medicine:

Dr. Schulman has completed all required coursework with the Institute for Functional Medicine to be eligible for certification as a Functional Medicine Practitioner. This training included:

A pioneer in integrative pain medicine and regenerative musculoskeletal medicine, Sonoma County physician Robert Schulman, M.D. has been diagnosing treating, preventing, and healing acute and chronic pain for more than two decades.

His practice is dedicated to integrative pain medicine and regenerative musculoskeletal medicine, which places Dr. Schulman as a physician at the forefront of a new renaissance in medicine.

He is board-certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, with additional board certification in Pain Medicine, Integrative Medicine, and Medical Acupuncture.

He is a fully trained practitioner in Functional Medicine and is one of a handful of medical doctors who are Registered Herbalists with the American Herbalist Guild.
